Projects and Campaigns

AMICA

This project was a new approach to combine long-term climate protection with short- and midterm adaptation measures on the local level as a means to improve coherence of decisions and allocation of financial means.

Black Gold from Green Forests

Aim of the project was to inform about the situation and consequences of oil production in the Amazon region regarding human rights, democracy, economy and environment. For this activities were carried out and options for actions as well as suggestions for solution were presented.

Further information here (only in German or Spanish)

Cogen Challenge

Cogen Challenge was an European campaign to support the realisation of small-scale cogeneration projects throughout Europe. Find supporting tools on

www.cogen-challenge.org

ECOLISH

Promotion of energy efficiency in low income and social housing with the help of Energy Exploitation and Energy Performance Contracting. The pilot cities develop tailor-made finance schemes, energy and building technical boundary conditions and guidelines for different juridical, financial and social aspects.

EnergyBridges

EnergyBridges - a campaign for energy justice - builds public awareness about the energy injustice between North and South. The partners in the Climate Alliance - European cities and municipalities and Indigenous Peoples in the Amazon rainforests - are lobbying for a fair use of energy through public education campaigns, lobbying and concrete project support.

European Mobility Week

Every year from 16 to 22 September

The European Mobility Week (EMW) has taken place every September since 2002. Cities and towns are invited to demonstrate their engagement for sustainable mobility as well as to inform of and/or involve their citizens in this issue in various creative ways. Activities should be organised, which aim to reduce individual motorised city traffic and support sustainable modes of transport. Emphasis should be placed on how each and every one of us can make a contribution towards climate protection with our travel behaviour. Climate Alliance is one of three organisations in charge of European coordination of the EMW.

For the German website, please go to www.mobilitaetswoche.de.

fifty/fifty PLUS - Energy saving in schools

Aim of the fifty/fifty PLUS project, which was sponsored by the German Federal Environmental Agency (UBA), is to extend and further develop the scheme for saving energy in schools and to secure its long-term future.

Ice Block Bet

The "Ice Block Bet" (Eisblockwette) event aims to highlight the large potential to reduce costs, energy consumption and CO2 emissions by installing thermal insulation, for instance to passive house standards.

Further information here.

Local Governments Climate Partnership

Exchange of experience among german, US-american and japanese local governments on successful climate change policies. The initiative is accompanied by the development of a benchmarking on CO2 emissions, implementation strategies and activity profiles.

POLIS – Identification and Mobilisation of Solar Potentials via Local Strategies

The project goes down to the local level in its attempt to boost solar energy. It looks at town planning and local policy in different European cities. The aim is to bring key players together so that solar energy is included in an integrated planning process. As solar energy has special needs in terms of legislation and municipal agreements, POLIS aims to increase the use of solar energy in European cities and to stimulate the cities involved in the project to act as top runners (these are Lisbon/PT; Lyon and Paris/FR; Malmö/SE; Munich/DE; Vitoria-Gasteiz/ES).

PRO-EE: Public Procurement boosts Energy Efficiency

aims at bundling the purchasing power of public authorities with the aim to accelerate market penetration of products fulfilling ambitious energy efficiency criteria. In 2008, a close consultation was held with European industry by developing criteria and expressing demand for such products. Selected products for joint procurement actions in 2009 are computer screens, electric vehicles and traffic lights. All local authorities in Austria, Germany, Italy, Greece, Portugal and Spain are invited to participate.

Public bicycles

Providing public bicycles is a way of combining the rapid transport which local public transport systems offer with the spot-on access to destinations which cycling offers. This is a way of making local public transport systems more attractive and thus more competitive vis-à-vis car use. The Climate Alliance is looking for cities and districts interested in setting up pilot systems using a novel, flexible rental technology.  (278 KB)

REMINING-LOWEX

Four ambitious local communities (Heerlen NL, Zagorje SL, Czeladz PL and Bourgas (Cherno More) BG) will demonstrate the use of local available low valued renewable energy sources, specifically from water in abandoned mines for heating and cooling of buildings, based on low exergy principles, facilitated by an integrated design of buildings and energy concepts.
The second phase of the project planned to last 8 years, started in 2009. Climate Alliance is responsible for dissemination and strategies for the communication with citizens in the pilot locations.

RES Champions League

The RES Champions League is a network of national RES leagues, which aims at creating a positive renewable energy competition between European cities, towns and villages. National leagues have already been established in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary and Poland. The local authorities in these countries compete in the fields of solar (photovoltaic and thermal) and wood energy. The European RES Champions League was launched during the joint Annual Conference of Climate Alliance and Energie-Cités in April 2009. The first European awarding ceremony should take place in May 2010 in Dunkerque.

SMILE

(Sustainable Mobility Initiatives for Local Environment)

SMILE aimed for the reduction of negative impacts of traffic on climate as well as the air quality and the quality of life. Data about successful local measures and initiatives were collected, analysed, edited and published Europe-wide. Although the project has already been completed, the SMILE website provides recommendations, a best practice database and study tours on exemplary sustainable mobility policies.

Support_ers

What can EU member states learn from each other in the promotion of renewable energies? And how can they best support the local level? The SUPPORT_ERS project contributes to the reduction of administrative barriers for the use of RES in the new EU member states and candidate countries, shows political decision makers options to support RES heat, and increases the awareness of regional stakeholders for the benefits of RES. The consortium consists of 12 partners. Ministries and national energy agencies with a direct link to RES policy processes form the core of the consortium. A network of municipalities and a European interest group are involved in order to ensure the link to the regional level and to the European RES industry.

SustainableNow

focuses on strengthening the role of local and provincial governments, as political and administrative bodies acting in an exemplary manner and guiding communities in the sustainable energy transition period. The project will address non-technical aspects, capacity building, peer exchange and reviews in order to create an environment of tangible results with an extensive audience of local and regional actors. The consortium of the Intelligent Energy Europe co-funded project is led by ICLEI and includes 15 partners. Climate Alliance is responsible for the task 'capacity building' and for the identification of adequate instruments to improve sustainable planning processes.

ZOOM - Kids on the Move

Climate Alliance's campaign for young children on climate change and mobility. They walk and bike to school, learn about our threatened planet and how to save it. Every journey is a green footprint on the childrens path to a better global climate.
