Each year from 16 to 22 September, European citizens have the opportunity to enjoy a full week of events dedicated to sustainable mobility.

| Public bicycles
Providing public bicycles is a way of combining the rapid transport which local public transport systems offer with the spot-on access to destinations which cycling offers. This is a way of making local public transport systems more attractive and thus more competitive vis-à-vis car use. The Climate Alliance is looking for cities and districts interested in setting up pilot systems using a novel, flexible rental technology. (278 KB)

| REMINING-LOWEX
Remining-Lowex is a project within the EU CONCERTO programme. The goal is to establish a supply of renewable (geothermal) energy for residential areas in former coal-mining areas, to improve the thermal performance of the housing stock and thus to reduce energy costs for resi-dents. The first phase of the project, scheduled to run for eight years, began in spring 2007.

| SMILE
(Sustainable Mobility Initaitves for Local Environment)
SMILE aimed for the reduction of negative impacts of traffic on climate as well as the air quality and the quality of life. Data about successful local measures and initiatives were collected, analysed, edited and published Europe-wide. Although the project has already been completed, the SMILE website provides recommendations, a best practice database and study tours on exemplary sustainable mobility policies.
