Solar Lamps for the Peruvian Rainforest
One third of the population of Peru has no access to electricity. Their source of energy and light is mainly petroleum – with terrible consequences for their health and the environment. For years, Climate Alliance has been supporting projects for the distribution of solar lamps in indigenous communities in Peru. There is great demand, as these lamps improve the people's living conditions noticeably. The mobile devices give light for up to six hours and are recharged via small solar modules (3 watts) or charging stations for ten lamps (40 watts).
| Better Living Conditions and Protection of the EnvironmentThe venture in Iquitos, a town in Northern Amazonia in Peru, follows various aims: improve living conditions, enhance environmental awareness and push renewable energies, create jobs, avoid CO2 emissions, develop cooperations between municipalities and schools in Europe and Amazonia. |

Meanwhile, a specifically built workshop is up and running where semi-skilled technicians have assembled the first 100 kits and are handing on their knowledge to others. Thanks to LED technology the lamps have become more energy-efficient and are also available as torches and with an adapter kit for mobile phones. The inhabitants believe in the great value of these lamps and consent to project conditions concerning environmental protection. The workshop in San Martin has become an important focal point in the surroundings of which have developed new revenue opportunities for the village. State institutions and development organisations alike are interested in adopting the project model, and twelve communities in Peru have signed an agreement – the 300 solar kits from the second project phase will not be enough!
