Coaching Local Climate Protection
The "Coaching Local Climate Protection" project supports municipalities started out with structured climate protection work. The project target group is primarily small and medium-sized municipalities with tight personnel and budget capacities wishing to benefit from the knowledge and experience of “pioneer municipalities”.
Various modules to support the municipalities are being developed, such as a starter pack with practical tips to implement rapidly-effective and visible climate protection measures. Further internet modules shall prepare "Arguments for sceptics" and show how a "Climate protection and monitoring quick concept" can be developed for the municipality. A whole range of other project examples are presented in an ideas pool (to complement the immediate measures), which have been prepared by practitioners from experienced municipalities with concrete implementation guidelines.
In addition to the website, an individual consulting programme (coaching) is being designed for municipalities by experienced municipal climate protectors. This programme will first be developed and tested in five pilot municipalities, then made available to other interested municipalities.

"Climate Protection in Municipalities" guidelines
Within the scope of this project, the content and structure of the 1997 guidelines drawn up by the Deutsches Institut für Urbanistik, the Ifeu-Institut Heidelberg and Climate Alliance on behalf of the German Federal Environment Ministry were entirely reworked. Climate Alliance was primarily responsible for the “guidelines for action” section in which the municipalities are provided with concrete suggestions for action on the subject of climate protection in the form of transferable activity sheets. The guidelines were published in a print version as well as for use online.

KlimaScout
To prepare municipalities for adaptation to the consequences of climate change, Climate Alliance is to begin developing guidelines in the second half of 2011 in the form of a web-based guide for municipalities and an emergency support kit to deal with extreme occurrences. The aim of the guidelines is to help cities and municipalities in the development of an adaptation strategy and in the initiation and implementation of local adaptation activities. The information contained in the guidelines will be made available as a Wiki within an internet-based tool. The aim is for volunteer authors to develop the guidelines. Particularly specialists from the over 450 German Climate Alliance municipalities are invited to actively participate.
The website will be available in summer 2012.

Climate Toolbox
With its "Climate Toolbox" project the Climate Alliance provides local authorities in Germany with tools that they can use to initiate and realize campaigns on specific topics and aimed at specific target groups; the Toolbox also suggests way of involving the relevant population groups and players in local climate mitigation activities. The Toolbox provides appropriately tailored information and campaign plans, including text, printing and design templates that can be easily adapted by the local authority or used as they are. The suggestions can be selected, combined and used in ways that reflect the event taking place in the town or district.

LocalEnergy - Intelligent Energy Use in Cities and Municipalities
Intelligent energy use in cities and municipalities serves climate protection, spares the local household and prepares for the power supply in the future. In the project supported by the German Federal Environment Ministry and the German Federal Environment Agency the Climate Alliance has developed together with the environmental organisation Deutsche Umwelthilfe two offers for cities and municipalities. Above all for local energy experts and respectively environmental officers an internet-based data base with more than 400 concrete and exemplary measures and projects on the intelligent use of energy has been created. It should support the exchange between cities and municipalities by a new advisory service system. Thereby each advice was honoured with one point by the local authority that had realised a successful project, in order to increase the motivation for advices on the working level. Five regional workshops on the topics local energy standards, energetic refurbishment of buildings and energy optimised urban land use planning referred directly to local decision makers in politics and administrations.

Clever mobile and fit to work
With the campaign local authorities and businesses were assisted in the field of mobility management on company level. With the support of the German Federal Environment Agency an action suitcase with guides, flyers, posters, software was developed and on-side advices in the enterprises were arranged free of charge.

Cool School – Energy for the Millennium Goals
In the framework of the project secondary school pupils were informed about the development policy aspects of energy by involving them directly through campaigns and initiatives. In addition to the knowledge transfer, direct implementation of the content is achieved through role plays and art initiatives. The students learn how they can help to protect the climate on local level and contribute to achieving a fairer, more sustainable future. We involve municipalities and students directly: during a preliminary consultation, we advise of the energy-saving potential in educational establishments, and encourage the introduction of financial incentive schemes. The global circumstances illustrate the background and the urgent need for immediate action.

fifty/fifty PLUS – Energy savings in Schools
The aim of the fifty/fifty PLUS project, which is sponsored by the German Federal Environmental Agency, is to extend and further develop the scheme for saving energy in schools and to secure its long-term future. Application of the model has frequently met with success and is linked to a system of financial incentives. fifty/fifty PLUS provides help to local authorities and schools throughout Germany with the aim of achieving broader participation. The PLUS consists of: "coaching" through the provision of detailed information, advice and training, the bundling and evaluation of available know-how, the development of a network of experts and users and the trialling of a "promoter" model. Since January 2006 the campaign website has been offering a wide range of materials, best practice examples, newsletters, information on events and a competition for both newcomers and the more advanced.
