During the European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in the French city of Dunkerque on May 19th the winners of the first season of the Champions League for Renewable Energies (RES Champions League) have been awarded. In this competition cities and municipalities which are exceedingly engaged in renewable energies compare with each other.

The RES Champions League is a competition implemented by organisations in seven European countries with partial funding help from the European Union. The countries are Bulgaria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Poland. The pre-existing national leagues in the Czech Republic, France and Germany were the models for this European Champions League.
The municipality of Prato allo Stelvio from South Tyrol is the overall winner of this season because it exported both renewable energy and heat. Prato allo Stelvio’s win should encourage other participating countries and their citizens to make strides to catch up.
